《晚餐》讲述的是一个平凡的家庭遭遇接连的不幸，而曾经一起开心晚餐的幸福也不复存在。金导演表示：我明年就要50岁了，觉得平凡才是最幸福的事情。但是正如片中的主角们经历了离婚、失业、白发人送黑发人、偶然杀人等不幸一样，常常会有一些意外的不幸让一个平静的家庭四分五裂。刚开始我的剧本中并没有晚餐这场戏，但是拍着拍着觉得一家人一起吃晚餐的场景非常必要，因为那是最幸福的一个瞬间，所以才临时加了一场戏，并且作为了影片的片名。
